UniCamillus MSc Dentistry: A special talk by leading international experts

Professor Young Sam Kim and Doctor Young Min Park presented their innovative dental techniques to UniCamillus students

On Friday 29th September, from 2.30pm, UniCamillus had the great honour of welcoming two distinguished international personalities in the field of dentistry: Professor Young Sam Kim and Doctor Young Min Park, both from Seoul.

Their talk began after the Advanced Surgical Extraction and Implantology ASEI award ceremony, a CPD programme created in collaboration with UniCamillus and the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano (IST), and directed by Professor Ugo Covani.

Professor Young Sam Kim and Doctor Young Min Park, both tutors on the course, decided to stay one more day to meet the UniCamillus MSc Dentistry students and to introduce them to the most innovative dental techniques currently in use.

Wisdom tooth extraction: a painfree procedure thanks to Professor Young Sam Kim’s technique

The first session in chronological order featured Professor Young Sam Kim, co-director of the Programme. He delved into the topic of oral surgery concerning third molars, commonly referred to as “wisdom teeth”, with a particular focus on a condition affecting these teeth known as dysodontiasis.

Professor Young Sam Kim is a renowned oral surgeon from Seoul, internationally recognized for introducing his personal, minimally invasive, atraumatic technique for third moral surgery. With a vast teaching experience in Australia, the United States, Germany and Canada, he shared his knowledge and wealth of clinical case studies and diagnostic imaging techniques for performing third moral surgery.

Explaining his approach, Young Sam Kim said: “My method involves extracting the third molar while preserving the surrounding tissue and bone, while also minimizing the incision flap. This leads to significantly reduced pain and less bleeding when compared to traditional techniques”.

This technique is an ever evolving one. He stated: “I am currently focused on the prospect of preserving the roots of the third molar, and I am in constant collaboration with Professor Covani and the IST. Additionally, I am in the process of designing specific tools to be used in this innovative method”.

Aesthetics and Functionality: Veneers Explained by Doctor Young Min Park

The second lecture, scheduled for 3:30pm, was delivered by Doctor Young Min Park, who holds a degree in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics from the University of Pisa. He is also currently pursuing a PhD in Maxillofacial Surgery at Seoul University as well as serving as the president of the Korean Association of Dental Students Abroad (KIDA) and actively contributing to IST. In collaboration with Doctor Salvatore Cosola, he serves as the coordinator of the ASEI course.

Doctor Young Min Park transitioned the discussion from third molars to the realm of aesthetic anterior rehabilitation, an area in which he is a prominent professional. His presentation covered both no-prep veneers, which require no prior tooth preparation and can be directly bonded to the tooth surface, and minimal-prep veneers, which involve only a minimal removal of dental enamel before application.

“In the field of dental aesthetics, it is crucial to never lose sight of the tooth’s functionality, especially considering that such operations are not strictly necessary. This makes them even more delicate in ensuring the ultimate satisfaction of the patient”, Dr. Young Min Park emphasized. “Obviously, both no-prep and minimal-prep veneers represent innovative approaches, as they are non-invasive and yield aesthetically beautiful and natural results”.

UniCamillus: A Lesson in Global Curiosity

Both lectures left a lasting impression on our students, who eagerly took photos with the lecturers and diligently jotted down notes and questions. “They are truly remarkable. It’s exam season, and yet they’ve chosen to be here! You can see their genuine interest”, Doctor Young Min Park remarked enthusiastically.

While addressing two distinct facets of dentistry, both speakers shared a common dedication to innovation, scientific research and clinical excellence. These two exceptional professionals selected UniCamillus and its students as the platform to impart their extensive international expertise. “I’ve taught on various courses around the world, but this marks my first collaboration with a university, specifically teaching in a CPD programme”, revealed Young Sam Kim. “My experience with UniCamillus is incredibly gratifying, as it allows me to confer degrees”.

This reaffirms our University’s role as an international hub for cultural exchange at the highest level and a bastion of teaching excellence offering new ideas and showcasing the latest advances in the medical and scientific fields. “UniCamillus is unique because it stands among the very few institutions that collaborate with numerous other universities and research institutes, both within Italy and internationally. This openness fosters innovation from across the globe”, stressed Young Min Park.

For those embarking on a dentistry journey, what advice do these experts offer? “Embrace openness, collaboration, and international networking”, responded Young Sam Kim. Italy, like the rest of the world, boasts a wealth of talented dentists. “Students should seize the opportunities that UniCamillus offers them. The fundamental lesson here is to expand your horizons, fostering a curious appetite for knowledge on a global scale”.
