SECOND LEVEL MASTER IN  CLINICAL PERIODONTOLOGY

The periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that studies hard and soft tissues supporting teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them.

The clinical periodontology studies the diagnosis, the prognosis and the treatment of all kind of inflammatory pathology affecting the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.

The aim of this Master program is to improve the knowledge of clinical periodontology in dentists who want to study in deep this subject performing diagnosis, prognosis and treatment according to the evidence base dentistry and the clinical experience of tutors.

The Master is qualified as SCIENCE-EXPERIENCE due to its tecnica – scientific characteristics and experiential   

The Master main partner is the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano.

The teaching proposal of the UNICAMILLUS Master in addition to the legal qualification is divided into the following classes:

  • SCIENCE: courses characterized by a purely tecnica and scientific approach;
  • PLUS: courses characterized by a multidisciplinary approach also containing elements and managerial and non-medical-surgical subjects;
  • EXPERIENCE: the courses mentioned above with high and particular experiential activities of internships and internships in specialized structures

Master Start Date: February 2020

Location:

  • Lectures will be held at the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano.
  • The practical Hands on and the internship will be held at the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano.

Language: English

Final Certification and Formative Credits: all candidates who have completed the planned training and passes the final exam will receive a second level Master’s Degree in Clinical Periodontology with the assignment of 60 credits (CFU).

Duration: the Master’s program lasts 12 months and includes a total time of 1.500 hours, divided into:

  • practical activity and lectures and seminars;
  • internship (750 hours);
  • study and individual preparation activities including the preparation of the final exam.

Attendance mode: the attendance is mandatory for at least the 75% of the total hours of the Master.

For frontal lectures and seminars (unless otherwise comunication) a commitment of 4 session of approximately 5 days is forseen for the entire duration of the Master. The total hours of training will be scheduled in accordance with the host structure.

Seats available: The maximum number of available seats is of 30. A minimum number of 10 students is requested in order to start the Master. Below the thershold of 10, UniCamillus can unilaterally decide not to activate the Master (participants will receive the already paid partecipant fees back).   

 

TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

 

Theoretical and practical sessions will be integrated by practical session on artificial and animal models.

The following materials will be given to students by CD:

  • Surgical scheme;
  • Periodontal chart for the dental office;
  • Video of live-surgery.

Each student could bring to the dental clinic 2 their patients to perform oral surgery as first operator lead by the professor/tutor.

The clinical surgery session would be performed during the course according to the calendar of practical lessons.

The calendar of the lessons could be modified and adjusted, with adequate notice, due to the national and international scientific calendar.

The Master’s program includes the following teaching modules:  

 

Module 1 (3 CFU)

  • Anatomy, physiology and physiopathology of the supporting tissues around teeth and clinical implications.
  • Etiopathogenesis and pathological anatomy of periodontal disease
  • Semeiotics and diagnosis of periodontal disease

Module (2 CFU)

  • Periodontal disease and systemic conditions: a bidirectional relationship.
  • Periodontal disease no-plaque associated

Module 3 (2 CFU)

  • Evolution of microbiology: from Koch to Microbiome.
  • Infection and colonization of dental roots.
    • Mechanical treatment to control the dental root’s infection.
    • Chemotherapy treatment strategies to control dental root’s infection.
  • Guidelines for Surgical and Non-Surgical treatment strategies for the management of periodontal disease

Module 4 (2 CFU)

  • Non-surgical periodontal treatment NSPT
    • Modifications of the NSPT protocol and initial preparation
    • The soft tissue response

 Module 5 (2 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT basic strategies
    • Instruments
    • Flap and Surgical techniques
    • Management of interdental papilla and soft tissue aesthetic
    • Healing of surgical flap and defects
    • Stitches and suture techniques in periodontal surgery

Module 6 ( 2 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT
    • Causal therapy and reduction of the gingival pocket
    • Rationale
    • Indications and limits
    • Flap and Surgical techniques

Module 7 (2 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT: Reconstruction of periodontium

 Module 8 (1 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT: Muco-gingival surgery
    • Biology of soft tissue around teeth and aestetic

TEACHERS

The Master Director is Stefano Parma Benfenati and the co-Director is dr.Rosario Puglisi.

Dr. Parma Benfenati Stefano graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ferrara in 1978. Specialization in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics University of Genoa 1981. Master of Science in Periodontology Boston University 1984. Active member of the Italian Society of Periodontology since 1987. From 1986 to 1999, Adjunt Professor for the teaching of Periodontology at the University of Ferrara. Since 2010, Adjunt Professor of Master in Periodontology University Torino. Since 2013,Teacher of Master in Oral Surgery and Pathology, University Parma. Author of numerous publications and co-author of 3 books: GBR Rigenerazione Ossea Guidata a scopo implantare (NIKE, 2007) – Chirurgia Mucogengivale associata alle Tecniche Rigenerative in Parodontologia ed Implantologia (NIKE, 2013) – Parodontologia non chirurgica, (ANDI MEDIA,2015) e co-autore del testo Periodontal therapy: evidence based clinical success (Quintessenza,1998). Autore testo dell’Atlante Malattie peri-implantari: Trattamenti chirurgici (Quintessenza 2019).

Dr. Puglisi Rosario graduated in Dentistry at University of Perugia in 2009. Master – UIC – Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona. Master in Periodontology and Implantology – With EFP Program – UIC – Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona. Doctorate co – advisor (Barcelona-Siena) – PhD in Odontology – Agentes Quimicos y Biomateriales en Periodoncia at the UIC – Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) of Barcelona and PhD in Medical Biotechnology at University of Siena. Dentist – Consultancy in Periodontology, Implantology and Oral Surgery. Collaborating Professor – Department of Periodontology – UIC – Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. Theoretical-Practical Course on Mucogingival Surgery – Aloderm Vs. Connective. Full Member of SIDP – Italian Society of Periodontology.

ADMISSION AND SELECTION CRITERIA

One of the following degree titles are required to be admitted to the Professional Master Program (or near graduation by the Master enrollment deadline):

  • Master’s degree and / or specialist degree in medicine and surgery with specialization in  odontostomatology or qualification for the practice of dentistry;
  • Master’s degree and / or specialist degree in dentistry and dental prosthesis;

Other candidates who can also apply:

  • Candidates in possession of an accademic degree equivalent to those listed above obtained in a foreign University.
  • Candidates in possession of an accademic degree obtained abroad and equivalent in duration and content to those listed above.

The University reserves the right to admit candidates with different qualifications but relevant to the Master’s course.

PROCEDURES AND TERMS OF PRESENTATION OF THE APPLICATION

The application must be received, signed and written on plain paper, as well as written clearly and legibly, using the form available on the web site, by 30/01/2020:

  • Hand delivery at the University (From Monday to Friday 9 am to 1 pm.)
  • Registered letter A/R at the address: Scuola post-laurea – UniCamillus University – Via di Sant’Alessandro 8 – 00131 Roma;
  • Certified email at the email adress: unicamillus@pec.it (please specify the name of the Professional Master you wish to attend).

The following documents must be attached to the application:

  • a dated and signed curriculum vitae et studiorum european format;
  • photocopy of an identity card;
  • any other accademic titles that the candidate wishes to submit for the admission;
  • Statement of having read the information regarding the personal data treatment based to art.13 and 14 in accordance with the European legislation (UE) 2016/679
  • Photocopy of fiscal code or health insurance card (for Italian citizens and foreigners in possession of it).
  • For candidates in possession of equivalent qualifications to those required: substitutive declaration of certification, pursuant to art. 46 of D.P.R.28/12/2000,n. 445, certifying the achievement of the aforementioned titles in accordance with current legislation;
  • Candidates in possession of an accademic title obtained in a foreign country will have to present the “Declaration of studies abroad” using the form available on the web site.  Within 2 months from the beginning of the Professional Master Course, the candidates will have to provide to the student secretariat the original of the Official Italian translation of the Full Qualifications of Legalization and of the Declaration of Value issued by the Italian Embassy or General Italian Consulate competent for the territory in the country in which the title was produced.
  • Payment copy of the participation fee of the first installment: Euro 4.000 by 30/01/2020.

SUBSCRIPTION FEE

The partecipation fee is 8.500 Euros + extra fee for general costs (for foreign students) to be payed in 2 equal amount installments:

  • First installment: Euro 4.000 by 30/01/2020
  • Second installment: Euro 4.500 by 30/09/2020

If the candidate does not make the payment within the time specified by UniCamillus, he will lose the right to enroll / participate.
