Biography

Dr Gian Marco Contessa is a research scientist at the Fusion and Technology for Nuclear Safety and Security Department of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), where he has also been Radiation Protection Expert for the research centers of Casaccia and Frascati. Since 2020, he is Task leader of the Radiation Protection team of ENEA Sorgentina-RF project for the production of medical radioisotopes by means of fusion neutrons.

He is a physicist and has a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and he is a Medical Physics Expert. He has been working in the field of occupational safety from ionizing and non-ionizing radiation for more than fifteen years. Among others, he worked for ISPESL (now INAIL), ASL Roma “C”, the Department of Human Neurosciences of University “Sapienza” and the hospital San Pietro Fatebenefratelli.

Currently, he is Member of the Board of the Italian Association of Radiation Protection (AIRP) and of the Italian Federation for Radiation Research (FIRR), and he is lecturer of applied physics at the Universities “Sapienza” and “Cattolica del Sacro Cuore” in Rome.

He is author of more than 120 scientific and technical papers on topics of medical physics and radiation protection published in national and international journals.
