Giving blood means prevention: donors will get the results of the tests carried out on donated blood.

Please read carefully the Donation Requirements.

Donations Requirements

To ensure the safety of both patients and donors, these are some of the requirements donors must meet to be eligible to donate blood.

BEFORE THE DONATION

  • Breakfast: drink tea, coffe, fruit juice and eat 1 or 2 melba toasts; don’t drink milk and dairy products. 
  • Amount of blood that will be drawn: 450 ml.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • You must be at least 18 years old and up to 70 years old.
  • You must weigh at least 50 kg.
  • Hemoglobin: men: >/= 13,5 g/dl | women: >/= 12,5 g/dl.
  • Heart rate: between 50-60 and 100 bpm.
  • Donation frequency: men: have not donated blood in the last 90 days (3 months) | women: have not donated blood in the last 180 days (6 months).
  • Women may not give blood during and up to five days before / after their period
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women are NOT eligible to give blood. Women are eligible to give blood 6 months postpartum or after weaning.
  • People with coeliac disease are eligible to give blood.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Wait 6 months after returning from Tropical areas.
  • Wait 28 days after returning from endemic areas for Zica Virus and West Nile Virus.
  • Wait 6/12 months after returning from endemic areas for Malaria (Test).

WAIT 4 MONTHS AFTER:

  • Tattoos, acupuncture and piercings.
  • Endoscopy.
  • Blood transfusion.
  • Contact with other people’s blood.
  • Major surgery.
  • Risky sexual intercourse: occasional unprotected, mercenaries, with patners positive to HBV, HBC and HIV.
  • Ceased cohabitation, not sexual patner, with positive people for HbsAg and/or HCV.

TEMPORARY INELIGIBILITY

  • Antihistamines, 4 days.
  • Antibiotics, 15 days.
  • Cortisone, 20 days.
  • Anti-inflammatory, 7 days.
  • Dental care such as dental hygiene, 48 hours.
  • Dental extraction or devitalization, 7 days.

INELIGIBILITY

  • Severe allergies or allergic crises.
  • Fever, sore throat, cold.
  • Use of drugs or consumption of alcohol.
