UniCamillus supports Spallanzani Institute for the Coronavirus emergency

In this difficult emergency situation caused by Coronavirus, UniCamillus – International Medical University of Rome – has decided to promote fundraising organized by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases “Lazzaro Spallanzani”, the absolute excellence of Italian healthcare, for research on Covid-19.

The University tries to focus on the funding of clinical research and not only on support for the assistance. A choice that highlights the engagement of UniCamillus in pursuing one of its main missions: to allow the advancement of scientific knowledge by transferring it, then, to the society and putting it at the service of the prevention and treatment of different pathologies.

Scientific research in fact, represents the fulcrum of UniCamillus as an engine for the progress of humanity and the University’s commitment, especially in this critical moment, is to guarantee the right to health for all individuals.

Spallanzani’s scientists involved in the Coronavirus emergency include many UniCamillus Extraordinary Professors: Maria Rosaria Capobianchi, Director of the Virology Laboratory and of the Department of Epidemiology, Preclinical Research and Advanced Diagnostics of the Institute, and Professor of Molecular Biology, who with her team was the first in Italy to isolate Coronavirus; Giuseppe Ippolito, Scientific Director of the Institute and Professor of Infectious Diseases; Emanuele Nicastri, Director of the Division of High Intensity of Infectious Diseases and Professor of Pharmacology; Nicola Petrosillo, Director of the Clinical and Research Department in Infectious Diseases and Director of the Systemic Infections Complex Operating Unit and Professor of the University of General and Applied Hygiene; Giuseppina Liuzzi, INMI Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Infections in Pregnancy, Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics; Roberta Nardacci, Ultrastructural Research of the Institute and Professor of Applied Biology; Simone Lanini, Medical Director of the Institute and Professor of Medical Statistics; Antonino Di Caro, Director of the Microbiology Laboratory, Biological Bank and Cell Factory, Professor of Bacteriology; Gianpiero D’Offizi, U.O.C. Infectious Diseases – Hepatology, Professor of Gastroenterology; Delia Goletti, Head of the Translational Research Unit at IRCCS, Professor of General Pathology; Francesco Vairo, Head of Syndromic Surveillance of the Institute and Professor of Medical Statistics.

Every day the Spallanzani Institute, like all other health facilities, is witnessing greater work and psychological pressure. The fundraising is aimed especially at the realization of the study on the biology of the virus with two-dimensional and three-dimensional in vitro culture models; analysis of pathogenesis with infection and severity marker; the modernization of laboratory equipment and the biological bank.

“We thank, with great pride, UniCamillus for supporting us in a time of such emergency. The sharing of knowledge moves, hand in hand, by the need for certainty of news. Then, our doctors, health workers and nurses represent the source around which health information raises. ” Marta Branca, the General Director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani, declares.

The Rector of the University Gianni Profita expresses, in turn, “in the name of all the students and Professors, the most sincere gratitude for the extraordinary work done by the Spallanzani Scientific and Assistance Community with which UniCamillus is proud to be a partner”.

It is an important challenge that we will win only if we will stand together.

Let’s make a difference together!
