Although originally trained as a microbiologist and heading the first clinical microbiology department in Germany linking laboratory work with ward rounds, Michel Pletschette expanded his interests towards many issues in global public health. In his years of work with the European Union, he has gained large experiences in setting up research projects in many developing countries around the world.

He strongly believes in the Flexnerian concept of uniting research, clinical care and teaching and sees capacity building and scientific empowerment as the unescapable pre-condition for the attainment of better population health globally.  In recent years , he has multiplied clinical work and  teaching experiences in Africa and Asia
