Francesco Caridi

Physics - Fis/07

Graduated with honors in Physics at the University of Messina in July 2003, Prof. Caridi obtained a PhD in Physics (Nuclear Physics sector) at the same University on February 2007.

From July 2007 to December 2008 he was research fellow in the project entitled “Study of non-equilibrium plasmas generated by laser power pulses”, University of Messina and National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) – Catania Section; from December 2008 to June 2014 he was Expert Physicist at the Faculty of Sciences and at the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences of the University of Messina; since July 2014 he is Physicist at the Environmental Protection Agency of Calabria (ARPACal), Italy.

From 2004 to 2013 he participated, as an associate, in the Messina group of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) – Catania Section, within the national and international research projects PLAIA (Plasma Laser Ablation for Ion Acceleration ), PLATONE (Pulsed Laser Ablation for Transient ObtaiNable Electric-field), PLEIADI (Plasma Laser Energetic Ion Acceleration & DIagnostics), LIANA (Laser Ion Acceleration for Nuclear Applications) and ELIMED (MEDical applications at ELI-beamlines), aimed at the production and extraction of ionic beams, with high current intensity, from plasmas produced by laser ablation, to their post-acceleration by electric fields and to the characterization of multi-energy beams usable in different application contexts.

Since 2016 he has directed, as Scientific Responsible, research activities in the field of ionizing radiation, human and environmental radiation protection, within the framework of memoranda of understanding for joint research activities between the Environmental Protection Agency of Calabria and the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, Department of Information Engineering, Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy (DIIES), Department of Civil Engineering, Energy, Environment and Materials (DICEAM) and Department of Agriculture.

Since 2018 he has a scientific research assignment at the “Institute of Physics ASCR-ELI Beamlines”, Prague, aimed at the development of dosimeters indicated for ionizing radiation (produced by plasmas generated by laser ablation) and at the execution of dosimetric measurements during the decommissioning of secondary sources.

He carried out supplementary teaching activities at the University of Messina from 2004 to 2014; he was a professor of “Physics of forensic soils with laboratory and exercises” in the context of the Master in Forensic Geology at the University of Messina, academic year 2014-2015; adjunct professor, at the same University, of the courses of: “Physics Applied to biological systems and food production”, Degree in Science, Technology and Safety of Animal Production (L-38), a.a. 2018-2019; Didactic Unit “Applied Physics” of the course “The human body and its functions”, CdL in Obstetrics, a.a. 2019-2020.

He is a member of the Italian Physical Society (SIF) since 2004 and an ordinary member of the Italian Association of Radio Protection (AIRP) since 2018.

He has been enrolled in the National Register of Chemists and Physicists since November 2018.

He won the “Young Researchers Scientific Production 2005” prize of the University of Messina, the “Author of the best oral contribution” prize of the 6th International Workshop and Summer School “Towards Fusion Energy – Plasma Physics, Diagnostics, Spin-offs” in 2006 and the “Anassilaos 2010 award for scientific research”.

He is Referee for dozens of international scientific journals with impact factor; Editorial Board Member of the international scientific journals Applied Sciences (MDPI Publisher), Current Nutrition and Food Science (Bentham Science), Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Cogent Physics (Taylor & Francis Group), Probe-Environmental Science and Technology (Universe Scientific Publishing Pte), Journal of Radiation and Nuclear Applications (Natural Sciences Publishing), American Journal of Condensed Matter Physics (Scientific and Academic Publishing), Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences (Gavin Publishers), Asian Engineering Review (Asian Online Journals Publishing Group), Springer Nature Applied Sciences (Springer), Journal of Metallic Material Research (Bilingual Publishing Co), Region-Metals (EnPress Publisher), GeoScience Bulletin (Bio-Byword Scientific Publishing), Probe-Geology and Mining Research, International Journal of Recent Advances in Physics (Wireilla Scientific Publications).

Since 2004 he has been a speaker (also by invitation) at numerous national and international scientific congresses and seminars.

He is the author and co-author of 95 scientific publications in international journals with impact factor and 79 publications in national and international conference proceedings and reports; h-index: 20 (Source: Scopus).

He obtained the Italian national scientific qualification as University Associate Professor for SC 02/D1-SSD FIS/07 (Applied Physics to Cultural and Environmental Heritage, Biology and Medicine) in 2017; the Italian national scientific qualification as University Associate Professor for the SC 02/B1-SSD FIS/01 (Experimental Physics of Matter) in 2019 and the Italian national scientific qualification as University Full Professor for the SC 02/B1-SSD FIS / 01 (Experimental Physics of Matter) in 2020.
