Odontostomatology and Deglutition by Luca Signorini, Professor of Elements of odontostomatological diseases at UniCamillus

The mechanism of deglutition consists of 7 stages, the first of which is the so-called “oral” one.
This phase is the only one taking place under voluntary control and is fundamental for preparing food for the subsequent phases.

The food is shredded by the teeth and mixed with saliva by means of the movements of the tongue and the muscles of the cheeks.
Saliva contains enzymes that begin the digestive process and the sensory stimuli of taste activate gastric secretion and peristalsis.
It is therefore a fundamental moment of the entire process and all the pathologies that can affect the functioning of this anatomical area will have a heavy impact on the whole deglutition.

Deglutition, as now all advanced medicine, has a marked holistic and interdisciplinary connotation and knowledge of odontostomatological pathologies is fundamental in order to have a complete vision of the topic.

Luca Signorini is a Professor of Elements of Odontostomatological diseases at UniCamillus in the Degree Course in Radiology, Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy Techniques and teaches Odontostomatological Diseases related to Dysphagia in the 1st level Online Master in Deglutology and Related Disorders.
