Degree in Obstetrics

The midwife graduates are suitably prepared in the basic disciplines in order to provide them both with the best understanding of the important elements which are at the foundation of the physiological and pathological processes which deals with the preventative and therapeutic intervention as well as the maximum integration with other professions. In addition, they must know how to use one European Union language besides Italian in the specific area of competence and for the exchange of general information. In the case of the current project, the knowledge of the English language (and in some cases French too) has already been foreseen as the characterizing aspect in the education of workers destined to work in developing countries.

The achievement of professional skills is implemented through a theoretical and practical education which also includes the acquisition of behavioral skills in order to guarantee the full mastery of all the necessary skills and their immediate marketability in the world of work at the end of the course.

The prerequisites needed by students who wish to enroll in the Degree course in Obstetrics are:

  • Adequate initial preparation according to what is foreseen by the current regulations to enter courses with a nationally limited number of participants
  • Good predisposition to human contact
  • Good team working skills
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems
  • Ability to autonomously acquire new knowledge and information by evaluating them critically.

Possession of a study title that meets one of the following criteria:

  • a secondary school diploma that gives access to the University, issued by a state or equivalent educational institution of the Italian education system in Italy or abroad;
  • final qualification of secondary education issued by an institution belonging to a foreign school system, located in Italy or abroad, obtained following a course of at least 12 years of schooling;
  • final qualification of secondary education obtained in a school system that includes 10 or 11 years of schooling, supplemented with one or two years of university, provided that all the exams scheduled for those academic years have been passed.

Candidates enrolled in the last year of secondary school can also participate in the selections at the state and private school institutions of the Italian education system or at a foreign secondary education institution that allows the achievement of a valid qualification for admission to courses of higher education of the Italian system with the condition, if the test results are positive, to present the diploma or qualification just obtained at the time of the subsequent enrolment to the courses, under penalty of exclusion from the list of admitted candidates.

Students already in possession of an academic degree (obtained in Italy or abroad) and those who come from another degree course or university degree are required to observe the same procedures indicated in this call for applications and take part in the admission test.

N. 35 slots for the Degree Course in Obstetrics are available to non-EU candidates.

N. 30 slots for the Degree Course in Obstetrics are available to EU candidates.

Non EU Citizens

Registration for the admission test will be possible from 21stMay 2018 and no later than 18thSeptember 2018.

In order to complete the registration for the admission test, each candidate needs to register and follow the instructions.

The candidate is responsible for the information given when filling in the registration form. The presence of false, incorrect or omitted information leads to the immediate exclusion from the test or, if already passed, the cancellation from the lists of those admitted.

The Admission test

The entry test for all Degree Courses is the UKCAT test.

UKCAT is a computer-based test to be taken at certified test centres (see Annex 1) and lasts two hours. The test consists of five separate sections to be passed within a set time and each consists of a series of multiple choice questions.

Additional time is granted to candidates with proven disabilities or particular medical conditions.

UKCAT Test Evaluation

The overall assessment is obtained by summing the scores of the Verbal Reasoning, Decision-making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning sections. The “Situational Assessment” section is not relevant for the final score. For details on the modalities of the UKCAT test, please visit www.ukcat.ac.uk.

The entry test, entirely in English, must be taken on one of the dates and places scheduled in the website www.ukcat.ac.uk during the period between July 2nd and October 2nd 2018.

A copy the "score" - delivered to the candidate by UKCAT on the same day of the exam - must be sent to UniCamillus by using their access to the portal obtained at the time of registration, no later than 5thOctober 2018.

UniCamillus draws up the final ranking based on the results scored in the UKCAT test.

EU CITIZENS

Registration for the admission test will be possible from 21stMay 2018 and no later than 29thSeptember 2018.

For all EU candidates, the participation fee of € 110.00 is not refundable for any reason.

The payment of the fee for access to the admission test does not complete the registration procedure. The registration process must be completed in its entirety (under penalty of exclusion).

Examination topics and admission criteria

The admission test for each Degree Course consists of a written testin English, composed of 75 multiple choice questions of logical, quantitative, verbal and abstract reasoning and 25 questions of scientific and general knowledge which have five response options, among which the candidate must identify only one answer, discarding the wrong, arbitrary or less probable conclusions. The test will last 120 minutes.

For the evaluation of the test a maximum score of 100 points is attributed according to the following criteria:

  • 1 point for each correct answer;
  • minus 0.25 points for each wrong answer;
  • 0 points for each answer not given or multiple marking or, in any case, for all ambiguous responses.

UniCamillus testing procedure

The final list of the calls to the written test will be published on 2ndOctober 2018 on www.unicamillus.org.

The written examination will take place on 6thOctober, 2018, at the location that will be indicated in the calls for the exam. The call for candidates is scheduled for 2 p.m.

The final list of the calls to the oral test will be published on www.unicamillus.orgby 9thOctober 2018.

Final ranking for admission

Starting from 16th October 2018 UniCamillus will publish the final ranking for each Degree Course on www.unicamillus.org, guaranteeing the anonymity of the candidates.

Formal didactics

This didactic form includes:

- lectures: dealing with one specific topic that is identified by a title and performed by a teacher with the help of computing and/or multimedia supports based on a predefined calendar and given to students enrolled to a specific course year and divided into small groups;

- seminars: didactic activities with the same characteristics as lectures but carried out contemporarily by many teachers with different competences and, as such, noted in the lesson registers in each one of them.

During the last period of the course, when non Italian students will have acquired sufficient command of the language, some courses may be taught in Italian.

Non formal didactics

It deals with interactive didactic activities aimed at small groups of students and coordinated by a tutor whose task is that of facilitating the students in the acquisition of knowledge, abilities and behavioral models. Learning mainly occurs through stimuli deriving from problem solving and the use of methodological skills needed to resolve them and taking decisions as well as through the direct and personal use of actions (gesture and relational) in practical exercises and/or attending clinical departments, surgeries, territorial facilities and research laboratories.

A) Teaching courses.

The integrated teaching courses are held by one or more teachers in function to the specific objectives assigned to the course.

The specific objectives of the individual courses that are contained in the exam programs and their programming are proposed annually by the course teachers within the start date of the enrolments for the new academic year.

B) Professional activities.

During the three year degree course, the student is required to acquire the professional specifications in the nursing field by carrying out internships in facilities identified by the degree course council (CCL) and in the defined periods. The internship can also be done in developing countries.

C) Elective activities.

The degree course council organizes the offer of elective didactic activities that are created with lectures, seminars, interactive courses with small groups among which the student is able to exercise their own personal option until achieving an overall number of 6 credits.

Each student autonomously chooses the elective activities among the didactics supplied.

The degree course lasts 3 years. The professionality acquired with the achievement of the degree in obstetrics at UniCamillus obviously opens up all the healthcare jobs of this profile present in the territory in both the public and private hospital field. It especially provides the possibility of exercising the profession in developing areas which have critical issues in healthcare. In particular, the graduates at UniCamillus will be able to:

  • assist in physiological pregnancies which provide assistance to pregnant woman: healthcare information and education, data collection, midwifery exams, prescription exams, execution of some of these, diagnostic summary, registration of events and resolutions;
  • give good information and advice regarding the problem of family planning according to the maternal and paternal principle with particular reference to the context in the Southern parts of the world;
  • identify the socio-healthcare needs of a pregnant woman by giving every informative-educative support which aims at removing conflictual situations in the presence of drug addiction, poverty, disability etc.
  • assist in the labor and physiological birth by enhancing the centrality and emotions of the woman during childbirth and respecting the natural evolutionary stages and times of labor;
  • assist the healthy newborn with particular attention placed on the postnatal stages and the promotion of the communication and nutritional link between the mother and child;
  • assist in the normal childbirth and a desirable continuity of care for the woman, enhancing the link between the mother and child by supporting breastfeeding and giving information about events linked to the needs of the child and the restoration of normal relations whenever partners and families are involved;
  • conduct courses after childbirth by privileging those paths which enhance the sense of maternal competence and favoring the security in her relationship with the child as well as working towards the rehabilitation of the perineal and abdominal muscles;
  • give healthcare education in both individual and organized situations with greater effort being placed on the prevention, diagnosis and rehabilitation of tumors and degenerative or involution chronic illnesses of the female genitals;
  • use English in the specific area of competence and for the exchange of general information.
